WHAT IS A DSG OR DCT?

DSG stands for 'Direct Shift Gearbox', first introduced by the Volkswagen Audi Group. DCT stands for 'Double Clutch Transmission', adopted by many other car manufacturers. Both DSG and DCT work on exactly the same principles: both have 2 clutches, both have 2 output shafts, both are controlled by electro, hydraulic and mechanical controls (mechatronics).

Advantages: lighter gearbox with faster gear changes resulting in impressive fuel consumption.

Disadvantages: can be expensive to repair, components are expensive, only factory trained engineers with the correct tooling and diagnostic equipment can accurately diagnose and repair these complex units.
